Winston Africa

Finance Director

B.Sc in Chemical Engineering (University of Cape Town); B.Com Accountants' Conversion (University of Cape Town); Post Graduate Diploma Accounting (University of Cape Town); Chartered Accountant (SA); Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Institute).

Winston has been Finance Director since December 2008, having joined Prudential in June 2004 as an investment analyst. He completed his Chemical Engineering degree in 1993 and worked as an engineer for four years before completing his B.Com degree in 1998 and Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting in 1999. After completing his articles at Ernst & Young (EY) Cape Town in 2002, Winston worked as an audit senior in the EY Bermuda office until 2004. He obtained his CFA charter in 2009.

Meagen Burnett

Chief Operating Officer

Executive Director

B.Bus.Sc (Hons) Finance (University of Cape Town), Chartered Accountant (SA); Certified Information Systems Auditor.

Meagen joined Prudential as Chief Operating Officer in August 2011. She began her career with KPMG in January 1997 and moved with their Information Risk Management department to London in 2000. In 2001, she moved to Goldman Sachs as a senior associate in their Management Controls Division. In 2003, she joined JP Morgan; initially as an audit partner in their General Audit Division and subsequently as business manager in Investment Banking Operations. In 2009, she moved back to South Africa with JP Morgan, where she was the Head of Operations for their Investment Services Division.

Meagen is a member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board, Prudential Investment Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board, the Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, Fair Value Committee, New Product Committee and IT Risk Committee.

Bernard Fick

B.Com Maths and Actuarial Science (Majors) (University of Stellenbosch); Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries; Fellow of the Actuarial Society of SA.

Bernard has been CEO of Prudential Investment Managers since January 2010, having joined in February 2008 as Head of Institutional Business. He is responsible for all aspects of our Southern African operations, including Namibia. 

With over 23 years of industry experience, Bernard previously consulted to numerous retirement funds across South Africa, Namibia and the rest of southern Africa. 

Prior to Prudential, Bernard worked for Alexander Forbes Consultants & Actuaries in a variety of roles over a 15-year career, based in Cape Town, Windhoek and Sandton. For the last five years at Alexander Forbes, he headed up the Asset Consulting Division of Alexander Forbes. 

Bernard is Chair on a number of Prudential Boards and member of all Committees.

Bruce Grater

Independent Non-Executive Director

B.Bus.Sc (Hons) (University of Cape Town); Chartered Financial Analyst (SA and England) (CFA Institute); member of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants and qualified for the Public Accountants and Auditors Board.

Bruce has over 25 years’ experience in the financial services industry in South Africa and abroad. He is CEO and Portfolio Manager at Arkmore, a global investment advisory and asset managing consulting business he founded in 2003. Prior to this he worked for several years as a senior portfolio manager and investment analyst at Old Mutual Asset Managers, as well as an audit manager at Deloitte. 

Bruce is a member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board and the Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee.

David Knee

Chief Investment Officer

David joined Prudential in South Africa as Head of Fixed Income in December 2008, and became Chief Investment Officer in July 2016.

Alongside his CIO role, he is joint Portfolio Manager of several Prudential funds, including the Balanced Fund, Enhanced Income Fund and Global High Yield Bond Fund of Funds, the latter of which has won several Raging Bull and Morningstar Awards for performance.

He is also a member of Prudential’s Asset Allocation Committee, responsible for actively determining asset weightings across our multi-asset funds.

David joined the Prudential Group in London as part of the Fixed Income Team in 1997, and transferred to the South African office at the end of 2008. Prior to working at Prudential, he managed fixed income portfolios for another London-based asset manager, and in the early 1990s he was employed as a Fixed Income Economist for an investment bank.

Thabo Leeuw

Non-Executive Director

B.Com (Unizulu); BCompt (Hons) (Unisa); Management Advanced Programme (Wits Business School).

Thabo is a Non-Executive Director of Prudential and Hulamin Limited and also chairs the Board of ICAS (Pty) Limited. In addition, he serves as a member of the Strategic and Investment Committee of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund. Thabo completed his articles at Deloitte, Johannesburg, after which he gained senior managerial experience in the beverages, foods and liquid fuels industries. In 1998, he joined Cazenove South Africa as a research analyst and, in 2000, he was ranked among the top 10 analysts in the Healthcare and Transport sectors by the Financial Mail.

After moving into corporate finance later in 2000, he then became a director of Cazenove South Africa, heading up the BEE Advisory desk and playing a lead role in a number of Cazenove’s large BEE advisory deals. In 2004, Thabo gained Cazenove Group Plc directorship and became a partner in the global business.

Thabo is a member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board, the Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and Social, Ethics and Transformation Committee.

Graham Mason

Chairman

B.Bus.Sc (Hons) Actuarial Science (University of Cape Town); B.A (Hons) Economics (University of Cape Town).

Graham has been the Non-Executive Chairman of Prudential South Africa since January 2010, after having been CEO since its establishment in 1994. He has 25 years’ experience in asset management. Prior to founding Prudential South Africa, Graham worked for Prudential Portfolio Managers in London on both the Japanese desk and in the Global Policy Unit. He also worked for Prudential Corporation Asia as the Head of Fund Management based in Hong Kong. Graham is currently Head of the Retail Investment Team for M&G Investments in London.

Graham chairs the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board and is a member of the Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and Remuneration Committee.

Dr Sibs Moodley-Moore

Independent Non-Exectuive Director

B.A Honours (Simon Fraser University, Canada); M.A (Carleton University, Canada); PhD (University of Washington, USA); 1st year MBA (University of Connecticut, USA).

Subithra, or Sibs as she is affectionately known, joined the Prudential Board as a Non-executive Director in October 2013, where she is Chair of the Social, Ethics and Transformation Committee, and a member of the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee. She is currently a lecturer on South African politics and the on-site Director and Associate Professor of Global Studies for Trinity College, Hartford, USA, for their study abroad programme, at the University of Cape Town.

Prior to this, Sibs was an Executive Director at an asset management company in Cape Town for seven years, where she was responsible for recruitment, black empowerment and transformation, corporate social investment and mentorship programmes. She was also a lecturer in Political Science at the University of Stellenbosch from 1993-1999, and a Review Editor of Politikon, the South African Journal of Politics, from 1994-1997.

Sibusiso Mthembu

Non-Executive Director

BSoc.Sc (University of Natal); Post Graduate Business Admin (Wits University); Accounting Masters; MBA (Bond University, Australia).

Sibusiso’s career began in 1995 as a trainee analyst at Capital Alliance Asset Managers. In 1999, he went to Australia to complete his post graduate studies. He then joined the corporate finance team at Real Africa Durolink Investment Bank, and later moved to HSBC Investment Bank, where he was responsible for implementing project and corporate finance transactions for local and international clients.

In 2004, he joined Andisa Capital as an Associate Director on the corporate finance team. Following the closure of Andisa in 2005, Sibusiso co-founded Sansara Financial Services, a boutique corporate advisory, where he held the position of Executive Director focusing on originating mining-related transactions.

In 2007, Sansara was acquired by Macquarie First South and Sibusiso joined their global mining and resources team as an Associate Director. He left Macquarie in March 2009 to join the Thesele Group.

Sibusiso is a member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board and the Social, Ethics and Transformation Committee.

Grant Speirs

Non-Executive Director

Chartered Accountant (SA); B.Com (Hons)

Grant was appointed Group Finance Director of M&G Investments in November 2008 and has responsibility for strategy, financial reporting and tax. Grant was previously finance director of Prudential South Africa for nine years. In this role he had responsibility for investment operations, compliance, risk and IT, in addition to finance. Prior to this he spent two years at Maple Financial Group in the UK as a project accountant, before returning to South Africa. He originally qualified as a chartered accountant with Ernst & Young in Johannesburg in 1996.

Grant is member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board, the  Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and Remuneration Committee.

Linda Yanta

Independent Non-Exectuive Director

B Accountancy (University of Natal); Chartered Accountant (SA); Management Development Programme (Graduate Utility Institute, Stanford University, USA); Certified Internal Auditor; Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Linda is currently a Director in the Corporate Governance Services unit at SNG, and prior to joining in 2012 held management roles at Eskom: 10 years as General Manager - Assurance & Forensic, and six years as General Manager - Transmission Finance. He has also worked in financial management at Transnet and National Sorghum Brewery. 

Linda is a member of the Prudential Portfolio Managers (SA) (Pty) Ltd. Board and chairs the Board Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee.

Marc Beckenstrater

Head of International Investments

B.Sc Electrical Engineering (WITS University); MBA (University of Cape Town).

With over 20 years’ experience in investment management, Marc joined Prudential in 1999 as Head of Equity, and was Chief Investment Officer from December 2009 until July 2016. In his current role as Head of International Investments, he is responsible for managing international portfolios and will be relocating to M&G Investments (the parent company of Prudential South Africa) in London in early 2017 to lead an investment team managing Prudential’s international portfolios.

Marc is Portfolio Manager of Prudential’s Global Value Fund of Funds and Global Cautious Managed Fund of Funds, and is a member of the Prudential Group’s Global Markets Forum. Prior to Prudential, he worked at another asset manager, where he was responsible for managing R9 billion in assets.

Sumayya Davenhill

Head of Marketing

Post Graduate Marketing and Advertising (Red & Yellow School)

Sumayya Davenhill was appointed as Head of Marketing in November 2012. She joined from Old Mutual Investment Group where she headed up marketing and was responsible for the full suite of investment companies in the group as well as Retail Investment Marketing, including the Unit Trust Company.

Sumayya started her career in advertising and then moved into marketing working on brands such as Quaystone Asset Management and Nedbank. She has many years of financial services and investment-specific marketing experience.

Heidi Dreyer

Head of Corporate Sales

RPE Equities (South African Institute of Financial Markets); Diploma in Marketing Management (University of Cape Town); Member of the South African Institute of Financial Markets.

Heidi joined Prudential in August 2007 as Head of Corporate Sales and is responsible for the business development of the Corporate Retail market. She has worked in the asset management industry since 1993 in a business development and consulting role, providing consulting services to the unit trust industry association and to retirement fund trustees. Heidi is a member of the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM), holds the SAIFM RPE Equities and has a Diploma in Marketing Management from UCT.

Christo Geyer

Head of Business Development

B.Sc (Hons) Actuarial Science; Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries; Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa; Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Institute); Financial Risk Manager: Global Association of Risk Professionals.

Christo joined Prudential in January 2013 as Head of Business Development and is responsible for expanding Prudential’s presence in the retirement fund, multi-manager, corporate and non-traditional markets. He also undertakes institutional client service duties and is the CEO of Prudential Life.

Christo started his career in the Corporate Valuations department at Liberty Life in 1991. After qualifying as an actuary he moved to Alexander Forbes and worked for 13 years as Valuator for a variety of corporates and retirement funds.  He held a number of positions including Head: Financial Services Namibia; Deputy Head: Consultants & Actuaries Division; Managing Director: Alexander Forbes Life and Head: Corporate Consulting Services.  He then worked for the reinsurer Gen Re as Chief Marketing Actuary before entering the investment profession as Client Director at Investec Asset Management, where he oversaw a number of relationships with investment consultants and institutional clients, and was responsible for business development initiatives.

Kerry Horsley

Head of Risk and Compliance

B.A LLB (University of KwaZulu-Natal); Certificate in Compliance Management LLM (University Cape Town).

Kerry was appointed Head of Risk and Compliance in 2010, and is responsible for regulatory compliance, the operational risk management process and the legal function. Kerry achieved a Masters Degree in Law with honours in 2006. She joined Prudential from the Old Mutual Investment Group where she was the Head of Compliance. With experience in the industry since 1996, Kerry is well positioned to assist Prudential with safeguarding client assets.

Pieter Hugo

Managing Director of Prudential Unit Trusts

B.Com Mathematics (University of Stellenbosch); Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Institute of Actuaries (UK) ; Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa; Association for Investment Management and Research; General Management Program (Harvard Business School, USA).

Pieter joined Prudential as Managing Director of Prudential Unit Trusts and Head of Retail Business in May 2015.

Prior to Prudential, Pieter has been employed at Old Mutual since 1998 in a variety of roles spanning actuarial work, employee benefits, product development, and more recently senior management. In 2008 he became Managing Director of Old Mutual Unit Trusts, and was promoted to Deputy CEO of Old Mutual Wealth in 2011.

Michael Moyle

Head of Multi-Asset

Masters Engineering Mechanics (University of Texas, USA); MBA (University of Cape Town); Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Institute).

As Head of Multi-Asset, Michael is primarily responsible for the active asset allocation decisions taken in our multi-asset funds and institutional mandates. He is also joint Portfolio Manager of several Prudential funds, including the Inflation Plus Fund, Global Cautious Managed Fund of Funds, Global Value Fund of Funds and Global High Yield Bond Fund of Funds. Both the Inflation Plus and Global High Yield Bond Fund of Funds have won several Raging Bull and Morningstar Awards for performance.

In his previous role, Michael was Head of Real Return, and joined Prudential in May 2007. Prior to Prudential, he worked for another large South African investment manager for 10 years, where he was responsible for portfolio risk and construction. He has 16 years of investment industry experience. 

Valdon Theron

Head of Institutional Business

MBA (University of Stellenbosch); B.Sc (University of Stellenbosch) ; Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Institute).

Having joined Prudential in November 2009, Valdon is responsible for managing relationships with all of our institutional clients. 

Prior to working at Prudential, Valdon held a similar role at Investec Asset Management. He started his career in the insurance industry in 1996, where he worked in various areas including actuarial valuations, product management, marketing and strategy.

Hamilton van Breda

Head of Retail Sales and Distribution

B.Soc.Sc; LLB; Post Graduate Diploma in Tax; Certified Financial Planner

Hamilton is responsible for managing relationships with Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs), as well as retail client service and expanding Prudential’s presence in the retail market.

Hamilton joined Prudential in 2001 and has 24 years’ experience in the financial services industry. He has worked at various LISPs and asset managers in legal, advisory and sales positions, having started his career in 1993.  

Chris Wood

Chris joined Prudential in 2004 as an Industrial Analyst and became Head of Equity in December 2009. He is Portfolio Manager of the Prudential Equity Fund, which has won several Raging Bull and Morningstar Awards for performance under his management. He is also responsible for research on the Food, Media and Telecommunications sectors.

Prior to working at Prudential, Chris spent four years at another well -known asset manager, initially as a Quantitative Analyst and subsequently moving into a Research Analyst role responsible for both Resources and Industrial shares. He started his career as a Civil Engineer, working both locally and overseas. In 1999 he completed his MBA, which prompted a career move into financial services.
